This project investigates approaches to funeral rites and memorialisation among diverse groups living in Melbourne. We have a specific interest in advancing understandings of Baby Boomers, Christians and culturally diverse groups. The project will gather information about perceptions, experiences and plans regarding end-of-life decisions and funerary practices. Given a lack of knowledge in this area, the findings will be used to better inform support arrangements, and service provision.
We would like to invite you to share your insights with us by completing a questionnaire. The questionnaires will take approximately 7 minutes to complete. While you may not have considered some of these issues in depth, the research will offer an important opportunity to clarify and articulate needs in terms of funerary and memorialisation in Melbourne. The research will benefit the broader community by providing insights that will underpin future planning in funeral and memorialisation services.
While the research involves little or no risk, safeguards and precautions will be undertaken so that the research is both academically valuable and ethically sound. If any questionnaire items cause discomfort, participants are encouraged to skip or withdraw from the questionnaire. All data collected as part of this questionnaire will be treated according to strict confidentiality protocols and held in secure storage at Monash University.
The results will be made available through a report for the Victorian Government Cemeteries and Crematoria Regulation Unit as well as for the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust. The results will also be available through academic publications and a report for the community.
The project is being conducted by Gil-Soo Han, and Helen Forbes-Mewett:
